fly reel

fly reel
a fishing reel designed to hold a fly line, fairly light, simply constructed (as fly line is pulled off and cast by hand, is relatively short and has no weights for distance casting), attached near the end of the fly rod, and may have a drag system to create resistance to a fish pulling line rapidly. Single action reels have one turn of the handle equivalent to one turn of the spool (1-to-1), multipliers use gears to have a 2-to-1 ratio and automatic reels operate by a manually wound spring activated by a lever but are heavy and tend to malfunction
